SONY REINFORCES ITS ARCHIVE MIGRATION SYSTEM WITH OPENCUBE'S INGEST SERVERS

Sony Preservation FactoryTM chooses OpenCubeSD servers as the solution for its MXF archive migration needs.

TOULOUSE, France - February 13th 2008 - Sony, the global consumer electronics giant, also provides archive preservation services to the broadcast industry, and has just teamed up with OpenCube Technologies to enhance its archive migration system. OpenCube specializes in MXF-standard format and has implemented several Ingest servers at Sony Preservation FactoryTM to help streamline the transition from tape to files in the company's video/IT environments.

Both increasing market demand and the urgent need for data storage (audio/video/metadata) clearly indicate that MXF is the way to go. The MXF file exchange format wraps all the data in a single format, facilitating transportation as well as storage. The tape recorders previously used by Sony to preserve data are being replaced by a number of MXF-based OpenCubeSD servers. Connected to storage facilities, these servers significantly enhance system performance.

OpenCubeSD servers offer 24h/24 archive digitization. Robust and cost-effective, they can be easily integrated into existing automation systems. The servers generate XDCam Blu-Ray-compatible MXF files and also support the VDCP protocol used by Sony. Open and upgradeable, the equipment offers exciting new application opportunities, in particular those involving HD.

"Today's market demand is geared mainly to MXF for file-supported archive migration," explains Bruno Burtre, Manager of Sony Preservation FactoryTM. "OpenCubeSD is an ideal solution: it boosts our system performance, ensures MXF-standard compatibility and provides durable files. It is exactly the type of server we were looking for as it fulfills a full range of customer expectations."

"By implementing these new servers, Sony has positioned OpenCubeSD as a key solution in the migration of archives from tape to MXF files," says Benoît Février, OpenCube's CEO. "Many broadcasters have already opted for OpenCube. We are very pleased that Sony has also chosen our product to meet its numerous and varied customer needs."
